This weeks ‘Pick of the Week’ has been choosen by Chris Campbell and is the classic Tophet Wall, HS at The Napes.
“A Classic Rock route on excellent rock in an imposing setting and providing a fine line. It had been on my radar for some time and a day of good weather in September 2014 provided the ideal opportunity to do it with Andy Dunhill.
The first pitch was soloed in 1925 and, as I found out, there is little scope to use modern gear on it. Straightforward climbing after that with impressive surrounding rock leads to a 10m semi-hand traverse in a sensational position. Above and to the left of this area are modern test-pieces of the highest technical difficulty. The last pitch continues in fine style to complete a historic climb which is well worth the the 3 stars in the FRCC guidebook and the wait to be completed by me. On that day we were also rewarded by excellent views into Wasdale.”
