This week we have local Lake District climber John Holden who has chosen Pier of the Realm at Piers Gill Crag as his favourite Lakeland Revival route.
“Only climbers who have sampled the delights of Scafell Crag, the East Buttress and Pikes Crag on numerous occasions will venture on to the smaller crags above the Corridor Route. After all, the crags take the same (or greater) effort to get to, are small and are subject to the same vagaries of the weather. But the other point to note about them is that the rock is the same – superb – and Piers Gill Crag faces South West – the perfect direction for climbers enjoying a late start.
Al Phizacklea and Mike Lynch put up Pier of the Realm twenty two years ago and here I was with Al for a repeat ascent last year. You can see from the bottom that it’s not VS, but the climbing is rather good, steep and well protected until a sticking point three quarters of the way up. Anyone confident on HVS will enjoy the challenge.”
